Design
The Gearhead is broken down into 4 major components: Flame Effect Device (Accumulator), Flame Sequencer, Truss, and Truss Decorations.
These components have been broken down with project leads for each component.
Flame Effect Device
Lead: [JmValera]
Each flame effect device is made up of a five gallon propane tank the stock valve replaced with a 3/4" solenoid valve. This valve allows a very lage amount of fuel to be released at a high preasure to create a massive cloud of gass. The produced cloud is ignighted by the use of four 100,000 Volt spark generators.
The sparks will be inside the fire ball and will be emitted by ceramic electrodes. Wire to the electrodes are encased in a steal pipe and further protected by high temperature tape.
Flame Sequencer
Lead: [JmValera]
The main controler was originally designed by Lucy for a flame effect many years ago. It was never used for it's original purpose and is being used for the Giant Gearhead this year.
Truss
Lead: [DaveAble] & [?EthanMiller]
Truss rigging meeting: June 15th.
At the Truss rigging meeting, we came up with a design. A paper sketch has been worked out. Click below for more information.
Decorations
Lead: [PhilipDiaz]
We will have a 19' diameter screen, made from a lightweight mesh fabric for maximum wind transparency.
There will be a gearhead made from a UV-reactive fabric, sewn to the front of the screen. During the day, the gearhead will be very visible. At night, we can either use a blacklight to light the gearhead, or rear-project onto the screen.
The attachment points for the screen will be 24 size 2 brass grommets, reinforced with heavyweight canvas.
All seams will be sewn with high-strength nylon thread.

Fire Safety
We will have a fire extinguisher inside the DJ Booth in the event of a problem. The fire as it comes out of the accumulators will be pointed upwards, 16 feet above the truss.
The system requires that a special key be used to start the device.
A "FUEL MAIN CUTOFF" valve is located near the propane tanks.
Prior to utility, all componets will be preasure tested with CO2 and joints validated with a soap bath.
Testing
We are going to test the devices on the July 9th -> 10th at an undisclosed location. Join the fnfgearhead@yahoogroups mailing list if you are interested in being part of this effort. You will be trained in fire safety and use of this equipment.
Costs
Truss
Truss is to be rented from RA under the care of Dave Able. Some components will need to be rented from Impact Lighting. This is Dave Able's initial price quote. It may be lower.
